I created a visual story to accompany a poem as a part of the "Light Enters the Grove" publication from the Kent State University Press. The poem featured in the animation provided many visuals to create from. I produced both a printed poster and an animated video for this project.
Early sketches in my design process show that I leaned heavily into the water imagery, since the subject of my poem was a fish. However, I also included sketches with hooks, which was in line with the end of the poem when the author tries to remembers the fish being alive, not hooked on a line.

Early motion tests for the animation

I decided to go for a more interpretive approach with my visuals and simply show the fish swimming around, being lively. My animations of the fish still matched the tone of the poem. Feedback led to me to remove the fish at the end and instead have a hook appear in the animation. I integrated this idea because it matched the abrupt ending of the poem when the fish is no longer alive.

Finalized poster design

Finalized poster design. I was particularly proud of this result as I had mixed type and image together in a meaningful way that felt like good design.
